Winter in Padstow: a local’s guide with Cornish Horizons

As a 2026 sponsor of the Padstow Christmas Fayre, Cornish Horizons shares why winter might just be Padstow’s best-kept secret – and picks three favourite places to stay.

Fairy lights on the harbour, fishing boats bobbing at the quay and a wood burner waiting back at the cottage. As a 2026 sponsor of the Padstow Christmas Fayre, Cornish Horizons – the holiday cottage company that started life right here in Padstow – shares why winter might just be the town’s best-kept secret and picks three favourite places to stay.

Long before Padstow was a fixture on every foodie’s map, Cornish Horizons was matching holidaymakers with cottages from its original office on New Street. Founded in the town in 1991 as an independent family business, the agency now looks after homes the length of Cornwall as part of holidaycottages.co.uk – but its Padstow team still knows the town’s lanes, landlords and lesser-known corners better than almost anyone. We sat down with Catherine Arthur, Regional Marketing Manager, to talk winter breaks, wood burners and why the Fayre matters to them.

You started in Padstow. What does that mean for the business today?

“Everything, really. Cornish Horizons was born here in 1991, our team live locally, they know the owners personally and they’ve stood in these cottages themselves – so when someone rings and asks for ‘somewhere cosy, close to the harbour, that’ll take the dog’, we can genuinely help recommend which properties might be suitable for their requirements. That local knowledge can be really invaluable to some people.”

Why should people come to Padstow in winter?

“Padstow during the winter is one of my favourite times to visit. The crowds have disappeared, the beaches are often blissfully empty, and it’s much easier to get a table at some of the best restaurants. It’s the perfect time to slow down, wrap up warm and experience Cornwall at its most peaceful.”

What’s your insider tip for a winter weekend in Padstow?

“My insider tip for a winter weekend in Padstow is to take advantage of the quieter season. Not only are the beaches and coastal paths wonderfully peaceful, but if you time your visit right, many local businesses offer special winter discounts and incentives too. One of my favourite winter traditions is booking a Rick Stein charity lunch at the popular Seafood Restaurant, where you can enjoy fantastic food at great value while supporting local causes.”

Why did Cornish Horizons want to support the Padstow Christmas Fayre?

“It’s our hometown. We’ve been part of this community for more than 30 years, and the Fayre celebrates everything we love about Padstow – local food, local makers, and people coming together at a time of year when the town really needs visitors. Supporting it felt like a natural fit, and we’d love to help people turn a day at the Fayre into a proper winter break.”
